Residential building work is also covered by implied warranties under the Building Act 2004. These implied warranties apply for up to 10 years and cover matters including Building Code compliance, suitable materials and proper and competent workmanship.

Residential building work also has a 12-month defect repair period. If defective work is identified and notified within that period, the contractor has obligations under the Building Act in relation to remedying the defect.
