Once they've been thoroughly soaked they lose their bonding strength — the material breaks down internally and won't return to full strength even after it dries — and they're prone to mould. The more saturated the space, the more equipment it takes. The good news is that for a sudden, one-off event — a burst pipe, a storm, a flood — this drying cost is normally covered by insurance. (Gradual damage that's built up slowly over time usually isn't, which is a different situation.) Why can't I just dry it out with fans and open windows?
