It falls from the sky.
We drink it.
We cook with it.
We wash in it.
It grows our food, fills our rivers and lakes, and even helps generate the electricity that powers our homes.
Water is quite literally part of the lifeblood of our world.
But there is another side to water.
Put it somewhere it shouldn't be, give it enough time, and that same water can quietly destroy a building.
And that's exactly what happened in this Remuera bathroom.
When Aries Builders investigated the bathroom, our moisture testing showed very high readings around the shower and adjoining areas.
That told us there was considerably more going on than could be seen from the surface.
So the bathroom started coming apart.
The vanity was removed.
The shower was removed.
Floor coverings came up.
Wall linings were opened.
And with every layer we removed, the real story became clearer.
Water had been getting where it wasn't supposed to be for a long time.
The flooring had suffered significant deterioration. Moisture had spread beyond the immediate shower area, and damage was evident around the bottom plates and sections of the wall framing.
Eventually, the floor had to be completely removed to expose the structure underneath.
What began as a small leak had become a major repair.
That's probably the most important part of this story.
Water doesn't necessarily destroy your bathroom overnight.
It wins by being patient.
A tiny amount today.
Another tiny amount tomorrow.
Then again next week.
Given enough time, moisture can work its way beneath flooring, behind wall linings and into timber framing without giving you much indication of what's happening.
By the time the visible signs become serious, the damage hidden underneath can be considerably worse.
And that's where a relatively inexpensive repair can turn into a job costing many thousands of dollars.
The lesson isn't to panic every time you see a drop of water.
It's much simpler than that.
If something doesn't look right, investigate it.
A shower that suddenly starts leaking around an edge. A swollen skirting board. Flooring beginning to lift. A musty smell that wasn't there before. Paint bubbling. A patch of wall that keeps becoming damp.
These are your house telling you something.
And the earlier you find out what that something is, the more options you generally have.
In this particular bathroom, getting onto the original leak earlier could have dramatically reduced the extent of the eventual damage and repair.
After decades working on Auckland homes, we've seen what water can do.
But water itself isn't the enemy.
It's all about where it goes, how it's controlled and how long it's allowed to stay there.
Contained inside a pipe, a shower or a waterproofing system, water is something we couldn't live without.
Let that same water escape unnoticed into the structure of a house, and the story can become very different.
So if there's one thing to remember from this bathroom, it's this:
Never underestimate a small leak.
Because sometimes the difference between a small repair and a major rebuild is simply time.
